After Nuno showed us the Grammar of Ornament book in one of his lectures, as a pattern addict I grabbed myself a miniature second hand copy for a couple of pounds and became engrossed within seconds. Here I have included a few pages from the 'Hindoo' section of the book, although it explains that in fact Hindoo does not refer to Hinduism alone, but a wider section of Eastern society, encompassing different religions prevalent in India at the time these designs were created. The chapter looks at patterns predominantly from architecture, but also from other sculpture, pottery and ornaments. As a generalisation it states that the architectural features are created by building moudlings on top of one and other to create a pattern. The examples included in this blog post come from the caves of Ajunta, their paintings etc, in East India. There is quite a lot of speculation over the influence of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians here.
